I performed a full factory reset on my school laptop, choosing the option to delete everything and download Windows from the cloud because the local reinstall was not working. It probably came bundled with the laptop’s original factory image. A factory reset can reinstall manufacturer-provided trial software. If you never entered payment information or created an account, there generally isn’t a subscription to cancel. Uninstall McAfee through Windows’ Installed apps or Apps & Features, and restart afterward.
You can remove it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Search for McAfee, select the related entries, and choose Uninstall. If anything remains, use McAfee’s official consumer removal tool rather than downloading random cleanup programs. Windows Security/Defender should take over once McAfee is gone.
McAfee being preinstalled doesn’t automatically mean it is malware or that you owe anything. It is commonly included as a time-limited trial, and without billing details it should not be able to charge you. If this laptop was issued and managed by your school, check their rules or contact school IT before removing software, since they may control security settings.
