I'm considering a Ryzen 5 5600X3D and wondering how long it's likely to stay relevant for gaming. Since it has 6 cores and 12 threads, when might newer games start showing its age or require a faster CPU?

There’s no exact expiration date. It will remain useful until the games you play no longer deliver acceptable frame rates or smoothness. Most games today don’t gain a huge amount from moving from a modern 6-core CPU to an 8-core model, and the 5600X3D’s extra cache helps it perform particularly well in gaming. Your GPU, resolution, target frame rate, and expectations will matter just as much.
Six cores may eventually become more limiting in demanding new releases, especially if you want very high refresh rates or strong background multitasking. However, it’s difficult to predict when that will happen, and a 6-core, 12-thread processor is still a mainstream configuration. For typical gaming, it could remain satisfying for several years.
The practical answer is simply “until you’re no longer satisfied.” Someone playing a large backlog of older or less demanding games could get close to a decade of use, while someone chasing maximum settings and high FPS in every new release might want an upgrade much sooner. There isn’t a universal point where the 5600X3D suddenly becomes irrelevant.
Even older CPUs can remain perfectly usable for years if the owner is happy with the performance. It’s better to judge by your actual frame rates and game settings than by the core count alone.
