My 13-week-old cat knocked roughly 12–16 fl oz of soda directly onto my Acer Aspire 3's keyboard. The laptop was left wet for a short time while I was out of the room, and the speakers stopped working afterward. I shut it down immediately, positioned it so the liquid could drain, and removed the bottom cover to inspect the damage. The speakers were heavily exposed, and there was also some soda on or near the battery and surrounding components. I used isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth to dab away visible residue inside the case. I'm assuming the speakers may need replacement, but I want to prevent further damage and keep the laptop running through the rest of my undergraduate year. What else should I do, and what's the safest way to clean the keyboard?

The speakers may be permanently damaged if soda soaked into their cones, especially because the syrup leaves a sticky residue. They’re usually replaceable, but the bigger concern is corrosion or residue on the keyboard and motherboard. The keyboard may need to be removed for a thorough cleaning, and a repair guide or video for the exact model can help you avoid damaging the clips or cables.
A spill can sometimes cause temporary problems that improve after everything dries, so don’t assume every failed part is beyond saving yet. Still, soda is much worse than plain water because of the sugar and acids. Keep it disconnected, clean as much residue as you safely can with 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol, and consider professional cleaning if liquid reached the motherboard or battery connector.
Keep the laptop completely powered off and disconnect the charger. If you can safely disconnect the internal battery, do that too. Clean any sticky residue with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs, taking care not to scrub or spread liquid across the motherboard. Leave it open and unpowered for at least 24 hours—48 hours is safer—before reconnecting the battery and testing it. Don’t use heat or turn it on just to see whether it works.
I’m going to leave it off as long as possible and look for a teardown guide specific to this laptop before trying to disconnect the battery. I have assignments due soon, but avoiding a short circuit is more important.
