How should I plan a work-and-gaming PC build?

I'm planning to buy a new desktop for work and gaming, but I'm not sure where to begin or what parts I need. I'd like plenty of storage and strong graphics performance, and I'm open to buying the components and building it myself. I've heard memory prices have increased recently, so I'm unsure what a reasonable total cost looks like. I don't have a firm budget yet, but I'm willing to spend generously for a high-quality system and would prefer not to cut corners. What information should I figure out before choosing parts?

The first thing you need to establish is a realistic budget. There’s a huge difference between a solid midrange computer and a high-end workstation, so saying you’ll spend whatever it takes isn’t enough to choose balanced parts. A rough upper limit would make it much easier to recommend a build.

Your location matters too, since component availability and pricing vary by country. Once you know where you’re buying, set a maximum budget and list the games, work applications, monitor resolution, and storage capacity you need. Those details will determine how powerful the graphics card, processor, and other parts should be.
