My HP ENVY x360 Convertible 13-ag0000 has a built-in microSD card slot, but it does not detect any card I insert. The card works normally when connected through my phone, and I have also tried a second microSD card with the same result. The card does not appear in File Explorer or Disk Management, and updating the storage-related drivers did not help. I also made sure to insert the card fully. What could be causing the laptop's reader not to recognize the cards, and what troubleshooting steps should I try before buying an external USB card reader?

Since multiple cards work in other devices but neither is detected by the laptop, the problem is probably with the built-in reader rather than the cards. Check the slot for dust or bent contacts, gently clean it with isopropyl alcohol, and let it dry completely. Also make sure the card is pushed in far enough for the spring mechanism to click and lock it in place.
If the reader is functioning, the card should normally appear in Disk Management even if it needs formatting. You can try a different known-good card and check Device Manager for a disabled or missing card-reader device, possibly under storage controllers, memory technology devices, or USB devices. If no reader appears at all, it may need a hardware-specific driver from HP or the reader itself could have failed.
Formatting to exFAT is only useful if the card is detected but has an incompatible or damaged file system. Since it does not appear in Disk Management and another card has the same issue, formatting is unlikely to fix this. An inexpensive external USB card reader is a practical workaround, but first check the laptop’s support page for the correct card-reader driver and inspect the slot for physical damage.
I tried a second card too, and the laptop still does not see it anywhere. I may open the bottom cover to inspect the reader, but I’ll be careful not to damage the contacts.
