I updated my HP laptop's firmware through Windows Update yesterday and kept the charger connected during the process. Afterward, the laptop started showing a "Boot Device Not Found" message. The SSD does not appear in the BIOS, and the system diagnostics report errors 3F0 and 0502. A technician said the SSD should be replaced, but I'm wondering whether the drive can still be recovered or repaired. I'm also unsure whether the firmware update was interrupted or whether the problem is related to the BIOS settings.

A 0502 message usually means the BIOS reset to its default settings, often because of a CMOS battery or checksum problem. That reset can change settings such as UEFI versus legacy/CSM boot mode, or alter the storage-controller configuration. Check the BIOS date and time, boot mode, and storage settings, then load the correct defaults. Do not switch settings randomly if the drive contains important data—an experienced technician should verify the original configuration first.
The SSD should be removed and tested in another compatible computer or with a proper USB/NVMe enclosure. If it is recognized there, back up the data immediately and repair the Windows boot configuration if necessary. If it is not detected in any system, the drive may have failed, but a second diagnostic opinion is worthwhile before replacing it. Also, avoid reinstalling Windows or formatting the drive until the data has been secured.
Error 0502 generally points to a CMOS checksum or BIOS-settings problem, while 3F0 means the system cannot find a bootable device. Replacing the SSD based only on those codes may be premature. First, check whether the SSD is detected anywhere in the BIOS—not just whether it appears in the boot order. If it is detected, the boot mode or bootloader may be the issue. If it is completely missing, the drive or its connection needs to be tested separately.
So there is still a chance that the SSD itself is okay? The technician also said I must have stopped the firmware update before it finished.

A firmware update normally should not be interrupted, but the error codes alone do not prove that the update was stopped. The SSD needs to be tested directly rather than blaming the update or replacing the drive without confirmation.
