The web once felt fairly user-controlled: people could block ads, inspect pages, change how sites behaved, install extensions, and protect their privacy. Lately, major platforms seem to be pushing browsers toward a more locked-down model where websites can demand tracking, ads, popups, DRM, and other dark patterns.
If browser-based ad blocking becomes less effective, what practical forms of user control remain? Are alternative browsers, DNS filtering, Pi-hole, reader modes, user scripts, paid websites, or legal pressure realistic options? Or is the modern web simply becoming hostile by default? This is less about choosing a particular browser and more about understanding what users can realistically control going forward.

The browser is not necessarily failing when a site detects blocking; the site owner controls what the server sends and whether access is conditional. Users can choose not to use services with aggressive advertising, tracking, or paywalls, and that choice may be more powerful long-term than trying to defeat every individual workaround. Paid access and less dependent websites are imperfect, but they are alternatives to accepting intrusive ads.
Layered blocking works better than relying on one tool. A DNS filter or Pi-hole can remove many tracking and advertising domains across computers, phones, and smart TVs, while browser extensions, reader modes, and user scripts handle things that network-level blocking cannot. It will not stop every ad, especially when ads and video come from the same domain, but it can make the web much more manageable.
Network filtering cannot reliably distinguish an advertisement from a video when both are delivered by the same service. Page-level tools that inspect the document are still needed for those cases.
Using a browser that keeps strong extension support is probably the most direct option. Firefox and some other alternatives remain more flexible than Chromium-based browsers that are reducing the capabilities ad blockers rely on. The bigger concern is market share: if too many sites optimize only for Chromium, alternatives may survive technically while becoming harder to use.
That is the real risk. A browser can be open and customizable, but if websites only test against one engine, users still end up dealing with compatibility problems.
There is a genuine conflict of incentives. Advertising funds some small sites, but large platforms also profit from extensive tracking and increasingly intrusive formats. Users are allowed to filter what reaches their screen, while site owners are allowed to restrict access or introduce subscriptions. The practical goal is probably not perfect control, but choosing browsers and services that preserve as much privacy, customization, and interoperability as possible.
The same issue appears with DRM and proprietary media support: convenience often comes with less user control. Open standards and DRM-free formats are important counterweights, even if they do not solve every problem.

Users also have a legitimate reason to block ads. The problem was not just ordinary banners; many ads covered content, opened extra windows, autoplayed sound, or behaved like security risks. Those practices pushed people toward blocking in the first place.
