iPhone 16 repeatedly says it needs to cool down even when it isn’t hot

I received an iPhone 16 as a gift last July, after using an iPhone 11. Around six months later, it began showing the "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it" warning every few seconds to two minutes. It sometimes appears immediately after I pick up the phone, even when it hasn't been under heavy use or exposed to heat. The retailer sent it for repair, but they said they couldn't find a problem. An authorized service shop also checked it and found nothing wrong. I've tried restarting it several times, but the issue continues, so I've gone back to using my iPhone 11. I can't currently afford an expensive repair. Is there anything else I can try, and could Apple or the retailer still help even though the warranty has now expired?

Take it directly to Apple or an authorized service provider and show them a video of the warning appearing repeatedly. Even if the standard warranty has ended, ask whether consumer protection rules, the phone’s repair history, or a recurring unresolved fault qualify you for a no-cost repair or replacement. A previous inspection not finding the problem doesn’t necessarily mean the issue isn’t real.

Make a complete backup, then update iOS and perform a full restore. If possible, set it up as a completely new iPhone temporarily instead of immediately restoring your backup. If the warning still appears on a clean setup, that’s strong evidence of a hardware fault and should help when requesting another diagnostic.

Because the warning appears while the phone is idle, this may be a faulty temperature sensor, battery, or another hardware problem rather than normal overheating. If the phone is swelling, lifting the screen, becoming unusually hot, or smelling strange, stop charging and using it and have it inspected promptly. Don’t keep trying to use it if the battery looks damaged.

A replacement isn’t guaranteed once the warranty has expired, but Apple would need to diagnose it before deciding. Bring the previous repair paperwork and explain that the problem began while the phone was still covered. If they can reproduce it, ask for the diagnosis and repair estimate in writing before agreeing to pay.
