I'm putting together a starter PC for my daughter. Her current small-form-factor system with an AMD 6400 handles things reasonably well, but she wants more memory for art and design software, along with better performance in Minecraft and occasional Fortnite. I bought a refurbished Zotac RTX 3050 6GB low-profile card, hoping it would fit in the existing SFF system, but it was too large. I've made a new parts list with future upgrades in mind, which is why I chose a relatively oversized power supply. Would 32GB of RAM be worthwhile, or would 16GB be enough? I'd also appreciate any other feedback on the planned build.

The RAM choice isn’t really tied to the graphics card. Sixteen gigabytes can work for general use and lighter gaming, but 32GB gives design applications more breathing room and makes multitasking much smoother. For a starter system that’s meant to last, I’d lean toward 32GB if the price difference is reasonable. The bigger concern is storage: don’t use a mechanical hard drive as the only drive. Add at least a 256GB SSD for Windows and essential applications, though a 500GB or 1TB SSD would be much more comfortable.
For most design software, 16GB is starting to feel restrictive, especially if several programs or large projects are open at once. Thirty-two gigabytes is a better fit for this use case and should help the PC remain comfortable for longer. The RTX 3050 should be adequate for an entry-level build and for the games mentioned. If she continues doing more demanding creative work, the next major upgrade would probably be a faster graphics card with at least 8GB of VRAM.
That makes sense. I’d rather leave some room for larger projects, so 32GB seems like the safer choice.
The main issue I see is the lack of an NVMe SSD. Running Windows from a spinning hard drive will make the whole computer feel unnecessarily slow. If you need to reduce the budget, the extra fan pack would be an easier place to cut than the SSD. Even an entry-level NVMe drive will make a major difference in startup times and general responsiveness.
Good point about the fans. I appreciate the suggestion and will prioritize an NVMe drive instead.

Thanks, that’s helpful. I’ll make sure the operating system is installed on an SSD and look at the cost difference between 16GB and 32GB.
