I'm fairly new to PC gaming and am upgrading from a Radeon VII 16GB to an RTX 4090 with a Ryzen 7 7300X3D and 32GB of DDR5 memory. I mainly play story-driven games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, along with competitive games like Counter-Strike 2. Would a 4K OLED monitor be worth the extra cost, or would a 1440p OLED with a high refresh rate make more sense?

For story games, 4K OLED is absolutely worth considering. The contrast, colors, HDR, and added detail look fantastic, especially on a 32-inch monitor or a larger living-room display. If you mostly play cinematic games and can afford it, the 4090 is powerful enough to make good use of a 4K panel.
For competitive games, I’d lean toward 1440p with a very high refresh rate. 4K looks sharper, but demanding games can quickly become more GPU-intensive, and the extra frames and responsiveness may matter more in games like CS2. An ultrawide OLED could also be a good compromise if you like the format.
I upgraded from a 1440p ultrawide OLED to a 4K OLED, and the difference in sharpness was much more noticeable than I expected.
It mostly comes down to screen size. At 27 inches, 1440p is usually the better match, while 32 inches or larger makes 4K much more worthwhile. An RTX 4090 has plenty of power for 4K gaming at high settings, especially with upscaling available.
I play from a couch on a large OLED rather than at a desk, and the bigger screen, excellent contrast, and image quality make the experience feel much more immersive.
