Is a fully modular power supply worth the extra cost for a gaming PC?

I'm building a new gaming PC and deciding between a semi-modular and fully modular power supply. I like the idea of connecting only the cables I actually need to keep the case cleaner, but fully modular models usually cost a bit more. Besides easier cable management, is there any practical advantage? For a typical gaming build, would you pay extra for fully modular, or is semi-modular good enough?

For a large mid-tower gaming PC, either option works. A fully modular PSU is more useful in compact builds, systems with awkward cable runs, or if you regularly replace hardware. In a spacious case, unused cables can usually be tucked behind the motherboard tray, so the practical difference is fairly small. Also, don’t assume modular automatically means better—the specific model matters much more.

The extra connectors don’t provide a technical performance benefit, and they add a tiny bit of electrical resistance. That difference is negligible in real-world use; the benefit is simply having fewer cables cluttering the case.

Focus on the PSU’s quality, safety features, warranty, efficiency, and appropriate wattage before worrying about modularity. Fully modular models are often higher-end simply because they cost more, but there are also excellent semi-modular units. If the two otherwise comparable options are only a few dollars apart, I’d choose fully modular; otherwise, semi-modular is a sensible way to save money.

The main advantage is convenience, not performance. With a fully modular unit, you can leave unused cables in the box and make installation or future upgrades easier. It can also help in a small case where every bit of space matters. For a normal case, though, a semi-modular model is usually perfectly fine and the permanently attached motherboard cable is something you’ll use anyway.

Exactly. Most builds still use nearly all of the permanently attached cables, so fully modular is mainly a quality-of-life upgrade.
