I want to pair a Bluetooth speaker with my PC so my girlfriend can watch videos and hear the audio. I'm not planning to use Bluetooth for gaming peripherals like a mouse or keyboard—just occasional connections for a speaker, phone, or other small devices. Do I need a PCIe Bluetooth card, or would a small USB dongle work just as well? If a dongle is sufficient, are there any features or specifications I should look for?

Range is the main thing to consider. A tiny dongle is fine if the speaker stays nearby, but an adapter with an external antenna is better if you want to walk around with headphones or connect to something in another room. On Windows, most Bluetooth or combined Wi-Fi/Bluetooth adapters should work without much trouble; Linux compatibility can be more selective, especially with combo adapters.
A basic USB Bluetooth adapter should work perfectly for this. You don’t need a PCIe card just to connect a speaker or phone, and inexpensive adapters are usually enough for short-range use. Look for Bluetooth 5.0 or newer from a reputable brand.
One thing to watch for is Bluetooth audio delay. Some speakers introduce noticeable latency when video is playing, so the sound may not line up perfectly with the picture. A newer speaker with a low-latency mode can help, but Bluetooth isn’t always ideal when precise audio-video synchronization matters.
Cheap USB Bluetooth adapters can work reliably for years, especially if your motherboard doesn’t already include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A PCIe card is mainly worthwhile if you also want stronger Wi-Fi, a cleaner internal setup, or better range while freeing up a USB port.
