Is an RTX 5070 a worthwhile upgrade from my RTX 3060 for 1080p and VR?

The price is the main issue. I wouldn’t pay a large premium for a 5070 when a 9070 or 9070 XT is close in price. If you can find the 5070 around $600 or less, it’s a strong buy; otherwise, compare benchmarks and pricing for the AMD alternatives.

Before spending everything on the graphics card, consider whether a 1440p monitor would improve your experience more than expected. A 5070 will often be overkill for standard 1080p, while 1440p would let you take advantage of its extra performance. For competitive games, the monitor upgrade can be more noticeable than another large hardware upgrade.

For VR, the 5070 is a sensible choice because headsets can require much more rendering power than a normal 1080p monitor. It should also handle 1440p very well, giving you room to upgrade your display later. Just compare the actual prices before buying.

I’d look at AMD’s RX 9070 or 9070 XT too. They generally offer more VRAM and strong rasterized gaming performance, and they may be similarly priced or faster depending on local availability. The 5070 makes more sense if you specifically want features like DLSS or better ray-tracing performance.

The RTX 5070 would be a huge upgrade from the RTX 3060 and is easily powerful enough for 1080p. Your 9800X3D is an excellent gaming CPU, so you don’t need to worry about a problematic bottleneck. In most games, the GPU will be the limiting part instead—and that’s exactly what you want after upgrading.
