I want to build a new PC using my own money, and my parents are generally fine with that. My dad works in IT and has assembled a few office computers in the past, but he is concerned that one of us could damage an expensive component or that a part might arrive defective. He is especially worried about troubleshooting, identifying which component failed, and dealing with returns or warranty claims.
I understand that these are possible risks, but I would enjoy choosing the parts and assembling the computer myself. Prebuilt systems also tend to be poorly priced where I live, and I am particular about the components and appearance I want. I have friends who have built PCs before, and I am comfortable following detailed instructions and doing research.
How realistic are my dad's concerns? Is building a PC still safe and straightforward for a careful beginner, or would it be better to have a retailer or professional assemble it? Also, how difficult is it to diagnose a faulty part without having a second computer available for testing?

I have built many systems and never damaged a component during assembly, but I have encountered defective memory, motherboards, and other parts. So the risk is real; it is just not a strong reason by itself to avoid building. The frustrating part is usually diagnosing the fault, not physically putting the computer together.
Use quality parts, avoid suspicious marketplace sellers, ground yourself or use an anti-static strap if that gives you peace of mind, and do not buy components so far apart that the return window expires before you can test the build. If you are prepared to spend some time researching and troubleshooting, building your own PC is usually a rewarding project.
Your dad’s concerns are valid, but they are probably more serious in his mind than they are in practice. Defective parts do happen, and troubleshooting can be frustrating, but permanent damage from assembly is uncommon when you work slowly and follow instructions. Most problems are something simple such as a loose power cable, incorrectly placed front-panel connector, outdated BIOS, or memory installed in the wrong slots.
You do not necessarily need a second PC to troubleshoot. Start with the motherboard’s diagnostic LEDs or beep codes, test with only the essential components, reseat cables and memory, and follow the board manual’s troubleshooting steps. Make a plan with your dad before ordering: choose a reliable seller, confirm the warranty and return periods, budget for the possibility of a replacement, and agree that you will troubleshoot methodically instead of immediately assuming something is broken. Watch a build video using the same case or a similar motherboard, and read the entire motherboard manual before starting.
The main thing is to accept that the computer might not boot on the first attempt. That does not mean you destroyed anything. Take a break, check every connection, and work through the possibilities one at a time. The experience will also make future upgrades and repairs much easier.
It is worth comparing the total price against current prebuilts before committing. Hardware prices fluctuate, and sometimes a reputable prebuilt can be cheaper because the company bought components in bulk or has a sale. A prebuilt can also simplify support, although it may use less desirable proprietary parts and make upgrades harder.
If the custom parts are reasonably priced and you want the specific look and hardware, building yourself is a sensible choice. Paying a shop to assemble separately purchased components can cost nearly as much as the convenience is worth, so I would either build it with help or buy a complete system from a reputable builder.
The assembly itself is generally very manageable. Treat it like careful, expensive Lego: read the motherboard and case manuals, watch a couple of complete build guides, and never force a part that does not fit. The CPU socket and motherboard pins deserve the most care, while RAM and the graphics card may require more pressure than a first-time builder expects as long as they are aligned correctly.
Before buying, check compatibility using a parts list tool, then verify the details on the motherboard manufacturer’s website. Buy from reputable retailers, keep the boxes and receipts, and test the system as soon as all parts arrive. That way, a defective component is more likely to be covered by the retailer’s return period rather than requiring a long manufacturer warranty process.

Compatibility tools are useful, but they do not catch everything. It is still worth checking the motherboard’s supported CPU and memory lists, BIOS requirements, storage-sharing limitations, and power requirements manually.
