I'm planning a new PC with a budget of around ₹1 lakh, mainly for work and gaming. I initially planned to use an AM5 platform, but DDR5 memory is expensive and that also makes it harder to afford a good graphics card. Because of that, I'm considering AM4 with DDR4 instead. Would choosing AM4 be a reasonable way to save money in 2026, or is it better to stretch the budget and move to AM5 for a longer upgrade path?

DDR4 can still work if it allows you to afford a significantly better graphics card and you’re using a lower-end or midrange processor. However, compare the complete platform cost rather than just the memory price. If the AM5 system is only slightly more expensive, DDR5 is likely the better investment because it gives you more room for future CPU upgrades and should retain value longer.
AM4 is worth considering mainly if you already own compatible parts or find a particularly good deal on used hardware. For a fresh build at this budget, I’d prioritize AM5 and reduce costs elsewhere before choosing an older platform. A slightly cheaper AM4 build may end up costing more when you eventually replace the motherboard, CPU, and RAM together.
For a completely new build, AM5 and DDR5 are usually the better long-term choice. AM4 is effectively at the end of its upgrade path, so moving to a newer CPU later would probably require replacing the motherboard and memory too. The initial savings are real, but they may only delay the larger upgrade cost.
You could also compare the total price of other current platforms instead of choosing AM4 automatically. Sometimes a previous-generation system offers better value, but make sure the motherboard, processor, memory, and upgrade options all make sense together. Since your main use is gaming and work, don’t sacrifice too much GPU performance just to move to a newer memory standard.

That makes sense. I’ve changed my plan and will try to build around AM5 instead.
