I'm planning to build my own gaming PC and have been comparing DDR4 and DDR5 memory. DDR4 is considerably cheaper, which could let me buy 32GB instead of only 16GB of DDR5. I usually keep several apps such as Discord and Spotify open while gaming, so capacity matters to me. Is DDR4 still a sensible choice in 2026, or would it be better to choose an AM5 motherboard with DDR5 for better performance and future upgrades?

If you already have a DDR4 system, there’s no urgent reason to replace it. For a new build, compare the total cost of the motherboard, processor, memory, and graphics card. A well-balanced DDR4 system is still usable, but DDR5 is the more forward-looking option when the overall budget allows it.
Yes, DDR4 can still be perfectly fine, especially for a budget-focused build. In many games, the difference between DDR4 and DDR5 is small, while having more memory can be more useful when you keep several apps open. A good 32GB DDR4 setup may be preferable to 16GB of DDR5 if the rest of the system benefits from it.
The memory type is determined by the motherboard and processor platform. You cannot install DDR4 in an AM5 motherboard, since AM5 requires DDR5. DDR4 is generally associated with older platforms such as AM4, while newer platforms offer DDR5 and a better future upgrade path.
That’s what has me conflicted. I could afford 32GB of DDR4 on an older platform, but only 16GB of DDR5 on AM5.
Think about the whole build instead of choosing RAM in isolation. If the price difference is manageable, AM5 and DDR5 may be worth considering because you can upgrade the processor later without replacing the platform immediately. However, don’t sacrifice a much better graphics card just to buy the newest memory standard.

The most important thing is checking compatibility before buying. A parts-list tool can help confirm that the motherboard, CPU, and memory all work together.
