Is DDR5-6000 CL30 worth upgrading to, and should I use 2×8 GB or 1×16 GB first?

I'm running a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with a Radeon RX 9070 XT and a Gigabyte B650 EAGLE AX. My current memory is 16 GB configured as 2×8 GB of DDR5-5600 CL40. I'm considering upgrading to faster, lower-latency memory such as DDR5-6000 CL30, but I'm unsure whether the difference would be noticeable in gaming or everyday use with an X3D processor.

If I upgrade, I'd prefer to buy one 16 GB module now and add an identical module later for 32 GB. That would mean running single-channel temporarily instead of keeping my current 2×8 GB dual-channel setup. How much would that affect gaming performance, frame times, loading, multitasking, and productivity? Would it be better to keep the current 2×8 GB kit until I can afford a matched 2×16 GB kit, or is buying one 16 GB module a reasonable interim solution?

DDR5-6000 CL30 is faster than 5600 CL40, but the improvement probably won’t be large enough to justify replacing memory that already works. The 7800X3D’s extra cache makes it less sensitive to memory speed and latency than many other processors, so gaming gains would usually be modest.

Plan the future memory configuration carefully. Adding a second module with different specifications can make the system run both sticks at the slower module’s settings, and using four DDR5 sticks at high speeds can be difficult to stabilize. Ideally, buy a matched 2×16 GB kit rated around DDR5-6000 CL30 rather than mixing kits. Also check the motherboard’s memory support list and be prepared to lower the speed if two modules won’t run reliably at the advertised setting.
