Is It Safe to Keep Using an RX 6600 After a Capacitor Burned?

A capacitor on my AMD Radeon RX 6600 suddenly burned while I was using the computer. I saw a spark and a small fire, so I shut the system down immediately. The card still works afterward, including during gaming and other load tests, with no visible artifacts. I have used it for about three days since the incident, although I occasionally experience a blue screen roughly once a month.

The damaged part is a blue, cylinder-shaped capacitor marked 5kE20 270 16V. I would like to repair the card, but I currently have very limited money and rely on this computer for digital art and commission work. A specialized GPU repair shop quoted around half the card's replacement cost just for their repair service, so I am unsure whether it is worth paying for a diagnosis.

Would it be reasonably safe to keep using the card as-is, or should I stop using it until the capacitor is replaced and the surrounding circuitry is checked? I considered buying a matching replacement capacitor and having someone solder it, but I have no repair experience and have not found an affordable technician.

I would avoid treating this as a simple capacitor replacement. A component that sparks or catches fire may have failed because of a short somewhere else, and replacing it without checking the surrounding circuit could cause another failure or damage the rest of the computer. Stop using the card if possible, inspect the PCB for burned traces or nearby damaged parts, and have someone experienced test it before installing a replacement. If you do replace it, the capacitance, voltage rating, polarity, physical type, and low-ESR characteristics all need to match—not just the appearance.

The fact that it still displays an image does not prove the card is healthy. Some damaged power-filtering parts can let a card keep working until the next load spike, so the occasional blue screen may or may not be related.

If the capacitor is genuinely the only damaged part, this can be a relatively straightforward soldering repair, but it is not risk-free for a first attempt. The card would need to be fully removed, the old component desoldered, and a correct replacement installed with the right polarity. A beginner can easily lift a PCB pad or worsen a short by using too much heat. If you cannot afford professional repair, consider asking a local electronics or maker-space technician to inspect it rather than applying power repeatedly.

I have never repaired electronics before either, so I would not practice on an expensive graphics card. A basic soldering job may be simple, but diagnosing why the part failed is the important part here.
