I need an expensive textbook for school, and a classmate sent me a PDF copy that they got from somewhere else. I don't know where it came from, so I'm wondering whether opening it on my iPhone could infect the device or compromise my information. I'd like to use it if there's a reasonably safe way to do so.

PDFs can contain scripts or exploit bugs in the software that reads them, so there’s no absolute guarantee. Older, unpatched iPhones are the bigger concern. If the file opens normally and your device is current, the practical risk is low, but avoid unusual prompts or links inside the document.
If you haven’t updated an old iPhone in years, don’t open an unknown PDF on it until you install the available security updates. There have been past vulnerabilities involving PDF rendering, although they’re uncommon and generally fixed once discovered.
The more realistic danger may be phishing rather than a traditional virus. A PDF could direct you to a fake login page or ask you to install something. Don’t enter passwords, install profiles or apps, or follow suspicious links just because the document requests it.
