I recently bought a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 9070 XT, which uses a 12VHPWR connector and comes with a 12VHPWR-to-three-8-pin adapter. My current power supply is a be quiet! System Power 9 rated at 700 watts, but I've already ordered an NZXT C850 Gold as a replacement. Unfortunately, it won't arrive for about four weeks. The card can draw more than 360 watts at its default settings, so I'm worried about stressing the adapter or power supply while gaming. I've temporarily lowered the GPU power limit by 20%. Is it reasonably safe to use the card under load until the new PSU arrives, or should I avoid gaming altogether?

The card itself can potentially run at higher power, but the main concern is uneven contact or poor seating at the 12VHPWR connection. Warranty coverage for connector damage can be complicated because manufacturers may argue that the plug was not fully inserted or the cable was bent too close to the connector. Check the plug carefully every time and avoid relying on the warranty as a safety measure.
A larger power reduction would lower the load further. Setting the card around a 240-watt limit should put much less stress on the adapter and the older PSU, although it will reduce performance. Don’t overclock it, and stop using it if the connector becomes hot, discolored, or smells burnt.
The chance of the connector melting is probably low, but it isn’t zero, especially with a high-power card and an adapter. Make sure the connector is fully seated, avoid sharply bending the cable near the plug, and use separate PCIe power cables from the PSU where possible. For peace of mind, returning the card for a model with standard 8-pin connectors would be the safest temporary solution.
I specifically wanted this Nitro+ model, so I’m going to keep it. The reduced power limit is only temporary, and I’ll use the proper native cable once the replacement PSU arrives.
That warranty point is what worries me. I’ve seen claims that connector damage may be rejected if the manufacturer says the cable was loose or bent too sharply, so I’ll be especially careful with the installation.
