I was trying to remove my graphics card and pressed the PCIe slot's retention latch down, then twisted the card until I heard a click. The latch returned to its original position, and I still couldn't remove or reinstall the GPU. After trying to move the latch sideways for about 20 minutes, I used more force and ended up breaking the plastic clip. Can I safely keep using this PCIe slot without the retention mechanism? I'd rather not move the card to another slot if removing it will be just as difficult later.

Take a clear photo of the slot and the broken latch before powering the system on. If the damage is limited to the small locking tab and the GPU is firmly secured by the case bracket, the slot will often remain usable. However, if the plastic body has cracked or the contacts were damaged, avoid using it and consider replacing the board.
The graphics card may still work if only the plastic retention tab broke, but inspect the slot carefully first. Make sure none of the electrical contacts are bent, cracked, or pulled upward, and check that the card can sit fully and evenly in the slot. The latch mainly keeps the card secured during transport; the case screw usually holds it in place. If the slot itself is damaged or the card feels loose, replace the motherboard rather than risking intermittent connection or further damage.
Don’t force the card while removing it. Hold the latch in its released position while gently pulling the GPU straight out, since some slots require the latch to stay depressed during removal.
