I currently have 32GB of DDR4 in an older prebuilt system. The motherboard and roughly 300W power supply are effectively locked into the case, so upgrading the platform or safely supporting my RTX 3060 is difficult. If I move to a standard case with a replaceable motherboard and a properly sized PSU, would it make more sense to reuse my DDR4 with an AM4 motherboard, or should I pay extra for a newer DDR5 platform? I'm mainly concerned about the cost of replacing perfectly usable memory.

Before buying anything, identify the exact prebuilt model, CPU, and motherboard. A power supply being soldered into the case sounds unusual; it may simply be a proprietary or tightly fitted unit. Confirm the motherboard’s form factor, available connectors, and the RTX 3060’s power requirements. In any case, replacing the case, motherboard, and PSU is a sensible move if the current system cannot be upgraded safely.
I wouldn’t switch to DDR5 just because it’s newer. DDR5 prices can make the upgrade substantially more expensive, and your current 32GB of DDR4 is still plenty for gaming and general use. Build around the parts you actually need, especially a reliable power supply and a standard motherboard, rather than treating the RAM generation as the main goal.
You don’t upgrade for DDR5 by itself—you choose DDR5 when the CPU and platform you want require it. Since you already have 32GB of DDR4, an AM4 build can be a very cost-effective way to move into a modular case and proper PSU. A Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 5700X would be suitable, while a 5700X3D or 5500X3D could be especially worthwhile for gaming if the price is reasonable. Your RTX 3060 can be reused for now.
AM4 is no longer a forward-looking platform, but it’s still capable of handling a midrange graphics card well. The money saved on memory could go toward a better PSU, motherboard, or a future GPU upgrade.
If you’re planning to replace the CPU and motherboard anyway, compare complete platform prices rather than just the cost of the RAM. A newer DDR5 system may offer a better future upgrade path, but it isn’t automatically the better value today.
