Is Microsoft for Startups still worth applying to for a bootstrapped startup?

My co-founder and I recently started a small, pre-revenue tech company. We're considering Microsoft's startup programs for benefits such as Azure credits, GitHub, and Microsoft 365, but we're unsure what the current application process looks like. Is the program still accepting applications and providing credits? Can a bootstrapped company without investors qualify, or is an investor or incubator referral now expected? How long does verification usually take, and what information helps prevent an application from being rejected?

It’s still worth applying, but the program structure and eligibility seem to have changed. The initial credit tier, around $1,000 in Azure credits, has generally been fairly accessible. Reaching the next tier, often around $5,000, may require additional business verification and can take more effort. An investor or incubator referral can improve your chances and may speed things up, but requirements appear to vary.

Business verification seems to be the biggest obstacle. Some applicants have still been rejected despite having normal documentation such as an EIN and D-U-N-S number, sometimes without a clear explanation. Make sure the legal company name, address, domain, and contact information match across every document and application field.

There may now be a distinction between the general Azure startup-credit offering and the broader Microsoft startup benefits program. The general Azure option may be available to a wider range of early-stage companies, while larger benefits or higher credit levels can be tied to Microsoft’s investor or partner network. If you’re working with an incubator, accelerator, or investor, ask whether they can provide a referral code.

The application is manageable, though the portals can be confusing. Be extremely clear about your company, product, website, business contact details, and intended Azure usage. Keep an eye on your credit balance after approval, and submit all verification information early rather than waiting until the credits are nearly used.
