I'm considering replacing my current i9-10850K and RTX 3090 system with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Radeon RX 9070 XT build. I wouldn't be able to sell or reuse the old PC because I'm giving it to a family member. For 4K gaming, would this be a noticeable enough improvement to justify the cost, or should I keep my current platform and upgrade only the graphics card?

For a total cost around $2,000 before tax, the 7800X3D and 9070 XT combination may be reasonable, but it isn’t necessarily the best value when you already own a 3090. A higher-end graphics card, such as an RTX 5080-class option, would provide a clearer 4K upgrade, though the roughly $2,700 system costs substantially more. The 7800X3D is generally the stronger gaming CPU compared with the Core Ultra 7 265F, but the graphics card matters more for this resolution.
The RX 9070 XT is faster than the RTX 3090 in many rasterized games, but it probably won’t feel like a massive generational leap at 4K. The 3090 still has plenty of VRAM and can benefit from features like DLSS, while the 9070 XT has newer architecture and stronger efficiency. The improvement will depend heavily on the games and settings you use.
The 7800X3D can provide a worthwhile gaming improvement in CPU-heavy titles, even at 4K, but the gains won’t be consistent. A user reported roughly 10–15 extra FPS in some 4K benchmarks after moving to the 7800X3D, while other games showed smaller differences. The GPU upgrade is likely to make the bigger overall impact.
I’d upgrade the GPU first and keep the i9-10850K for now. At 4K, the graphics card is usually the limiting factor, and your current CPU should still be capable in most games. You can then see whether the 9070 XT gives you the experience you want before replacing the entire platform.

That’s my concern too—the 7800X3D seems like the better gaming processor, but paying for a whole new platform only to pair it with a moderately faster GPU may not feel worthwhile. I’d either keep the current system longer or put most of the budget toward a more substantial GPU upgrade.
