Is My AM4 Motherboard Still Usable After the CPU Was Pulled Out With the Cooler?

I have a Cougar MX330-X case with a Gigabyte B550M DS3H motherboard. The old processor was a Ryzen 5 3600 with the stock Wraith Stealth cooler, and I recently bought a Ryzen 5 5600X and a replacement cooler. After unscrewing the stock cooler, it would not come free because the dried thermal paste had bonded the cooler to the CPU. When I pulled on it, the CPU came out of the AM4 socket while the retention lever was still locked. I eventually damaged or broke a few CPU pins while trying to separate the processor from the cooler, so I replaced it with the 5600X. However, I am worried that pulling the CPU out with the lever locked may have damaged the motherboard socket. The lever and socket mechanism still move normally and appear to lock correctly, and I do not see any pins stuck in the motherboard. Is the motherboard likely still usable, or could the socket or latch have been damaged?

The AM4 retention mechanism does not hold the processor especially tightly, so a stuck cooler can pull the CPU out even with the lever locked. Carefully twisting the cooler before lifting usually helps. For future replacements, run the computer for a few minutes first to soften the paste, and you can also try gently cutting through the paste with floss or similar thread.

I did try using floss, but unfortunately it did not separate the cooler.

This can happen fairly often with AM4 processors when the thermal paste has dried and bonded the CPU to the cooler. If the motherboard socket has no visible damage and there are no CPU pins stuck in it, the board is probably fine. The broken pins are more likely to be the only real problem.

Thanks! The pins were damaged while I was separating the CPU from the cooler, not inside the motherboard socket.

If the socket lever still moves smoothly, locks down properly, and there are no bent contacts or pieces lodged in the socket, the motherboard is unlikely to have been harmed. Install the new processor carefully and inspect the socket under good lighting before powering on.
