Is my GTX 1060 6GB worth reusing in a new $1,000 PC build?

I'm planning to build my first PC myself, with a parts budget of about $1,000. My current computer was built around 2017, and I'm wondering whether any of its components are worth carrying over. In particular, I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB. Is it still suitable for a new system, especially for gaming, or would it make more sense to replace it?

The rest of your current specifications matter too. If you’re only adding RAM or storage to an existing DDR4 system, the 1060 is still usable. If you’re moving to a completely new platform, especially DDR5, it makes more sense to treat the card as a temporary part and budget for a replacement when possible.

That makes sense. I mostly play at 1080p, so I may reuse the 1060 initially and upgrade it after the rest of the system is built.

It depends on what you play. If your current games run acceptably on the 1060, you can build the rest of the new PC around it and upgrade the graphics card later. That lets you prioritize a modern CPU platform, a decent power supply, enough memory, and fast storage without having to buy everything at once.

For a new $1,000 gaming build, I wouldn’t plan to keep the 1060 permanently. It will work, but it will limit the performance of the rest of the system. A used 12GB RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT would be a much more balanced choice for 1080p, while a newer 12GB or 16GB card would give you more room for future games.

The GTX 1060 was a very good mid-range card when it launched, which is why it lasted so long. However, it’s now an older mid-range GPU with only 6GB of VRAM. If gaming is your main goal, consider putting the money toward a more modern card instead, such as a used RX 6700 XT, RTX 3060 12GB, or another current entry-level option.

Yes, you can reuse it as long as the card is still working and the new power supply has the right connector. It should handle esports and older games at 1080p, but newer AAA games will probably require low settings and may still run poorly. With a $1,000 budget, the 1060 would likely become the weakest part of the system.
