I'm putting together a new PC with a Radeon 9070 XT. My main goals are playing competitive and AAA games, running several virtual machines, and handling multitasking without the system feeling sluggish. My budget can cover either a Ryzen 9 9950X3D or a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but I'm unsure whether the extra cores are worthwhile. Which processor makes more sense for this use case, and should I prioritize additional memory instead?

The 9950X3D makes more sense if you’ll regularly run multiple VMs at the same time, since the extra cores and threads give them more room while your host system stays responsive. For occasional or lightweight VMs, the 9800X3D should still be perfectly comfortable.
For gaming, the 9800X3D is already extremely fast and should pair well with the 9070 XT. You probably won’t notice a meaningful gaming advantage from the 9950X3D, so there’s no need to spend extra unless your other workloads are genuinely CPU-heavy.
The 9800X3D is the better value for a gaming-first build. Put the savings toward a larger, good-quality memory kit or faster storage. Only choose the 9950X3D if you know your VM workloads will use many cores consistently.
I’d also look closely at memory capacity. If choosing the 9800X3D lets you buy more RAM, that may help virtual machines more than the additional CPU cores, especially when several VMs are open.
