Is the ASRock RX 9070 XT Challenger reliable, or worth paying extra for another model?

I'm planning to buy an RX 9070 XT, and the ASRock Challenger is the least expensive option available where I live at about 80.9k INR (roughly $842 USD). Other models start around 85k INR ($890+), while the ASRock Steel Legend costs approximately $860.

I've seen several reports of Challenger cards suddenly failing, including one person who claimed theirs died twice. On the other hand, plenty of owners say their cards have worked perfectly. For anyone who owns an RX 9070 XT Challenger, how has your experience been? Is there evidence that this model is more failure-prone, or is it worth saving the extra $40–$50?

The regular RX 9070 is also worth considering if it is significantly cheaper. It uses about 220 W compared with roughly 304 W for the XT and is usually only around 10–15% slower at stock, with the difference varying by resolution and ray tracing. For 1440p, it can offer better value, although the XT remains faster.

The Challenger is cheaper mainly because its cooler performs worse than the more expensive versions, not because it is known to fail more often. That can usually be mitigated with a sensible undervolt, assuming your case has decent airflow. If temperatures and noise are important, paying extra for a better cooler may make sense, but the cheaper model is not automatically a bad card.

Several owners report that their Challenger has been completely stable, including after extended gaming and stress testing. One owner has used theirs for close to a year without hardware or driver problems, and another has been running demanding games with no complaints. Based on the available experiences, it seems like a reasonable buy if the price difference matters.

I’ve also had mine for around ten months with no issues. A family member’s Steel Legend has been equally reliable over the same period.

There’s no clear evidence that the RX 9070 XT Challenger has an unusually high failure rate. You can find failure reports for practically every graphics card model, and those posts tend to stand out more than the many owners who have no problems. A few alarming anecdotes aren’t enough to establish that the model is defective.
