I can buy a new i7-14700 for about $380, which is cheaper than the i9-12900K/F, i7-13700K/F, and i7-14700K/F. My current system has an i5-12600KF, an RTX 5070 Ti, an ASRock Z790 PG Lightning/D4 motherboard with the latest BIOS, 32GB of Kingston Fury Beast DDR4-3200 CL16, a Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, and a Cooler Master G800 Gold power supply.
I mostly play at 1440p and want to know whether the standard i7-14700 is enough for the 5070 Ti, or if spending roughly $30 more on the 14700K or 14700KF is worthwhile. I have also considered overclocking my 12600KF, but I am unsure whether it can keep up with the GPU, especially while using DDR4. Is upgrading to the 14700 a meaningful improvement for gaming, or would the money be better spent elsewhere?

For gaming, an overclocked 12600KF is still a capable match for a 5070 Ti at 1440p, particularly if you play at high settings. DDR4-3200 CL16 is not ideal compared with newer DDR5, but it should not prevent the system from performing well. The 14700 would be a much larger upgrade for heavily threaded work such as rendering, compiling, or video production than it would be for typical gaming. Before replacing the CPU, try tuning the 12600KF and check whether your games are actually CPU-limited; if the GPU is at or near full usage, a CPU upgrade will not add much performance.
The regular 14700 and the 14700K/KF are not identical. The K models have higher power limits and unlocked multipliers for overclocking, while the standard 14700 is locked and generally runs with lower power limits. If you plan to overclock, the extra $30 for a K or KF can make sense, especially since you already have a Z790 board. At 1440p, though, the RTX 5070 Ti will often be the limiting factor, so the gaming difference may be fairly small.
I bought the motherboard at a discount, so it was only around $30–$40 more than the B760 options I considered. I was thinking of using a 125W power limit on the regular 14700 because I read that it can perform close to a 14700K in that configuration. I’ll weigh that against the small price difference for the K model.
My concern was whether the 12600KF could really keep the 5070 Ti fed at 1440p with DDR4. I may try a conservative overclock first and monitor CPU and GPU usage before deciding whether the i7 upgrade is justified.
