Is the RTX 3070 still a good choice for a new gaming PC?

For your situation, I wouldn’t reject the PC just because it has a 3070. It’s much faster than entry-level cards and is more than enough for 1080p gaming. The important question is the price of the entire system and whether the components are in good condition. If the deal is fair, it should serve you well; if the seller is charging close to the price of a newer build, keep looking.

It’s still perfectly usable, but compare the price with newer options. A 4060 Ti, 5060, or similar newer card may offer better features, lower power use, and longer driver support. The 3070 only makes the most sense if the complete PC is noticeably cheaper than a comparable newer system. Don’t pay nearly-new GPU money for an older 3070.

The card’s power draw and temperatures can be higher than newer models. An undervolt can reduce heat, noise, and electricity usage without a major performance loss, but it isn’t mandatory if the card stays at reasonable temperatures. Check the GPU’s condition, temperatures, and warranty before buying used, and make sure the 650W power supply is a decent-quality unit.

For 1080p, the RTX 3070 is still a solid card and should handle Warzone, BeamNG, and most other games well at high settings. It can also manage 1440p if you use DLSS and avoid maxing out every setting. The main drawback is its 8GB of VRAM, which is increasingly restrictive in newer, demanding games. If the used PC is priced fairly, it’s still a reasonable purchase.

I’ve been using a 3070 for years at 1440p and it still runs most games at medium-to-high settings above 60 FPS. You probably won’t be able to use ultra settings with ray tracing in every new release, but for normal gaming it still has plenty of life left. At 1080p, you should be comfortable for quite a while.
