I bought an RTX 5070 but haven't opened it yet. Someone is offering me an unopened RTX 5080 for $1,400, and I'm considering switching because I recently got a 4K monitor. Would the 5070 be good enough for 4K gaming, or is the 5080 a worthwhile upgrade? I mainly want a smooth experience in newer games and would prefer to stay with Nvidia, although I'm open to alternatives if they offer much better value.

Before committing, think about your target. If you only want 4K 60 FPS and don’t mind tweaking settings, the 5070 can probably work. If you want 100–120 FPS, maximum settings, or better longevity, the 5080’s extra GPU power and 16GB memory are worth having.
The 5070 is more naturally a 1440p card. It can handle 4K at around 60 FPS if you’re willing to reduce settings or use upscaling, but demanding newer games may run into both performance and VRAM limits. The 5080 is a much safer choice for high settings, ray tracing, or higher refresh rates.
For 4K, I’d lean toward the 5080 if the extra cost is comfortable. It has substantially more performance and 16GB of VRAM compared with the 5070’s 12GB, which gives it more breathing room in newer games and at higher settings. You could also sell the unopened 5070 to offset some of the upgrade cost.
I was mainly looking at Nvidia because I’ve always used their cards. The 5070 Ti is either unavailable or overpriced where I am, so I’m mostly deciding between the 5070 and 5080.
