Is the RTX 5070 worth paying 33% more than the RX 9060 XT for 1440p gaming?

I’d seriously compare the RX 9070 before buying either of these. It is faster than both cards and also has 16GB of VRAM, so it offers a better balance for 1440p longevity. Depending on local prices, the RX 9070 or 9070 XT may provide more value than the RTX 5070.

For your stated use, I’d rank the options roughly as RX 9070 XT or RX 9070 first, then RTX 5070, then RX 9060 XT. If the 5070 is genuinely only 33% more expensive and you want high frame rates for several years, it is defensible. But if an RX 9070 is similarly priced, that is probably the more attractive purchase because it combines higher performance with 16GB of VRAM.

The RX 9060 XT 16GB is still a perfectly reasonable choice if the budget difference matters. It should handle 1440p well today, and the extra VRAM is useful. Just keep expectations realistic: the 128-bit memory bus and mid-range performance mean the 16GB does not automatically make it future-proof. In newer games, you may need to lower a few settings sooner than you would with the 5070.

The RTX 5070 is roughly 30–40% faster at 1440p, so paying about 33% more is reasonable if you can comfortably afford it. Its stronger raw performance, ray tracing, upscaling, and frame-generation features should help it maintain good frame rates for longer. The 12GB of VRAM is not ideal for future-proofing, but you can usually reduce texture quality if a demanding game exceeds it.

The 9060 XT has more VRAM but may lack the performance needed to use it at very high settings, while the 5070 is faster but its 12GB could become limiting in some future 1440p games. If you need a card now, buy the strongest model that fits your budget; otherwise, a cheaper temporary card and an upgrade in a generation or two could be smarter.
