Is the RX 7900 XTX worth it for a $3,000 1440p gaming PC?

For pure 1440p gaming, I’d lean toward the RX 9070 XT if it costs about the same as the 7900 XTX. It has similar rasterized performance, uses less power, offers stronger ray tracing, and supports newer features. The 7900 XTX’s extra VRAM is mainly useful for specific workloads such as local AI models or unusually demanding texture mods. A 7800X3D paired with a 9070 XT should handle 1440p very comfortably for several years.

Neither card is a bad choice at the right price. If they cost the same and 1440p is your target, I’d choose the 9070 XT for its newer architecture and feature set. If you find a heavily discounted 7900 XTX, its extra VRAM and slightly higher raster performance could make it worthwhile. Also, FSR 4 support is not exclusive to the newer card, so that shouldn’t be the only deciding factor.

The 7900 XTX is still extremely powerful. It can deliver well over 100 FPS in many games at high settings, especially when paired with a 7800X3D. It makes the most sense if you also have a VRAM-heavy workload, such as running local language models. For gaming alone, though, the 9070 XT is generally the more balanced purchase.

The 7900 XTX still has a small advantage in traditional rasterized performance and gives you 24GB of VRAM, but the difference is usually difficult to notice at 1440p. The 9070 XT is newer, generally more efficient, has better ray tracing, and supports newer upscaling features. I’d only choose the XTX if it were substantially cheaper or you specifically needed the additional VRAM.

You could also save money elsewhere in the build. An all-in-one cooler is unnecessary for a Ryzen 7 7800X3D; a good air cooler such as a Phantom Spirit or Peerless Assassin is more than sufficient. Put those savings toward the graphics card, monitor, or other components instead. For storage, compare current prices and endurance rather than focusing only on advertised sequential speeds.
