I'm planning to build a PC without a dedicated graphics card at first, then buy one in about four to six months. I'm considering the AMD Ryzen 5 8600G because of its integrated graphics, but I'm unsure how well it performs as a CPU compared with other AM5 options and whether it will still hold up for gaming over the next three to five years. Is it a sensible choice, or would another processor and a temporary used graphics card be better?

The 8600G’s integrated graphics can handle lighter games and older titles reasonably well, usually with reduced settings and resolution. It may be enough to get you through several months, but I wouldn’t count on it delivering consistently high settings in newer games. Once you add a dedicated GPU, the lower cache can also affect frame rates and especially 1% lows in some games.
The 8600G is usable for entry-level gaming without a graphics card, but its integrated GPU is the main reason to buy it. As a regular CPU, it has less cache than other AM5 chips, so it can perform worse in some games once you install a dedicated GPU. It’s not a terrible choice, but it involves a noticeable long-term trade-off.
If you can find an inexpensive used graphics card, pairing that with a Ryzen 5 7600 or a similar non-G processor would probably be the better path. You could use the card temporarily and sell it later, while keeping a stronger CPU platform for the next few years. Even a basic second-hand GPU would likely provide a better experience than the 8600G’s integrated graphics.
The Ryzen 7 8700G has a stronger integrated GPU, but it has the same general concern: the G-series chips sacrifice CPU cache compared with processors such as the Ryzen 5 7600. A high-end chip like the 7900X would be excessive for a gaming-focused build, and not every AM5 processor includes integrated graphics, so check the exact model before choosing one.
That makes sense. I’m mainly trying to avoid buying a weak CPU now just to save money on a temporary graphics solution.
