Is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D worth paying extra over the Ryzen 5 5500X3D for VR gaming?

I'm upgrading from a Ryzen 7 5700G because Blade and Sorcery drops to around 40–50 FPS during heavy physics situations. My goal is to get as close as possible to a stable 90 FPS in VR. The GPU doesn't seem to be the limitation: I get roughly the same performance even when lowering the graphics settings, while playing at 1832×1920 per eye on high settings. I can buy a Ryzen 7 5800X3D for about 6,680 MXN ($400), or a Ryzen 5 5500X3D for around 4,239 MXN ($250). I can afford the 5800X3D, but is the extra cost worthwhile for this game and use case?

The 5800X3D will be faster in a CPU-heavy physics game, thanks to its two extra cores, higher boost clocks, and generally better performance. Expect something in the neighborhood of a 10–15% advantage, though the exact result depends on the game and how severe the physics load is. If stable 90 FPS is the priority and the price is manageable, the 5800X3D is the safer choice.

At your prices, the 5500X3D is probably the better value. It should still be a major upgrade for gaming over the 5700G, and the 5800X3D costs roughly $150 more for a relatively modest performance increase. The 5800X3D makes sense if you want the best AM4 gaming option and don’t mind paying extra, but the cheaper chip may already deliver what you need.

Since lowering the graphics settings doesn’t improve your FPS, the CPU is very likely limiting performance in those scenes. Just keep in mind that neither processor can guarantee a locked 90 FPS in every physics-heavy situation. Check CPU frametimes and make sure your motherboard BIOS supports the chosen processor; adequate cooling will also matter, especially for the 5800X3D.
