Is the Ryzen 9800X3D Overkill for 1440p Gaming at 60 FPS?

My monitor is limited to 1440p at 60 Hz, and I'm deciding between the Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The 9800X3D costs more than twice as much in my area. For a 60 FPS target, would that extra cost be wasted, or is the stronger CPU worth considering for future upgrades?

The answer depends on the games and graphics card. Games with heavy simulation, large multiplayer sessions, heavily modded worlds, or high frame-rate targets can benefit from the 9800X3D. For ordinary 1440p gaming at 60 FPS, though, the 9600X is the better value.

If you already expect to buy a faster GPU and a high-refresh monitor soon, the 9800X3D could be a sensible long-term purchase. Otherwise, buying the 9600X now is reasonable; you can upgrade later if your requirements change. A cheaper X3D processor could also be a middle-ground option if one is available at a good price.

For a 1440p 60 FPS setup, the 9600X should be plenty. At that resolution, the GPU is usually the limiting component, and most modern CPUs can deliver a stable 60 FPS. The 9800X3D makes more sense for high-refresh gaming, CPU-heavy games, or a powerful GPU paired with a future monitor upgrade.

The 9800X3D would be overkill if you’re staying at 60 FPS. It can improve frame-time consistency and leave more headroom for demanding games, but paying over twice as much is hard to justify for your current display. Put the savings toward a better GPU or a 144 Hz monitor instead.

Moving from 60 Hz to 144 Hz is a much more noticeable upgrade for gaming than moving from a midrange CPU to the 9800X3D, assuming the GPU can produce those extra frames.
