My laptop is getting old and struggles with WoW Forever, usually dropping to around 30–40 FPS. I know the game still has optimization issues, but I'm also considering a general upgrade for 1080p gaming and some newer AAA titles. How does the Steam Machine compare with building or buying a similarly specced PC in terms of price, performance, and overall value? I'm not specifically focused on a tiny form factor, so I'm wondering whether its SteamOS and console-like experience justify the cost.

If you can buy the Steam Machine at its intended retail price, it may be reasonable for someone who wants a compact living-room device and minimal setup. At inflated prices, though, a gaming prebuilt or desktop is usually the better deal. The Steam Machine is also less upgradeable, while a standard PC gives you more freedom to replace the graphics card, processor, and other parts later.
For a regular desktop, I’d look at a current or discounted AM5 system, or a previous-generation build paired with a strong used graphics card. A sensible self-built or well-priced prebuilt could outperform the Steam Machine noticeably at 1080p. Just compare complete-system prices carefully, since memory and other component costs can make the savings smaller than expected.
A similarly sized ITX build makes the comparison less one-sided. Once you account for the compact case, specialized cooling, operating-system integration, and power efficiency, the price gap may not be huge. It’s better viewed as something between a console and a mini-PC rather than as a direct competitor to a full-size desktop.
Before replacing the laptop, make sure the frame-rate problem is actually your hardware. WoW Forever reportedly has a bug that gradually causes performance to collapse, even on very powerful systems. If the game runs well after logging in and only falls to 30–40 FPS after playing for a while, restarting the game may temporarily fix it. If performance is poor immediately, then an upgrade is more likely to help.
If you have room for a normal mid-tower, a desktop will generally give you more performance for the same money. The Steam Machine’s premium is mostly paying for its compact size, lower power use, plug-and-play setup, and console-style SteamOS experience. Those features can be worthwhile, but they aren’t the best value if raw performance is your priority.
That makes sense. I was mainly comparing it with consoles because they tend to offer good performance for the price, but it sounds like the Steam Machine’s main advantage is convenience and size rather than unbeatable hardware value.
