Yesterday I accidentally deleted a folder containing years of personal photos, videos, and other memories. The files had been on my Android phone while I was trying to transfer them to a USB drive, and I may have deleted the wrong folders after mistakenly thinking the transfer was complete. I haven't used the phone since and have already tried several recovery apps, but they only find files that are still present. I have root access and am willing to try technical options if there's any realistic chance of recovery. What should I do, and what should I absolutely avoid?

Before assuming everything is gone, check every possible copy: the phone’s trash or recently deleted folder, the USB drive, computer recycle bin, cloud photo storage, automatic device backups, messaging apps, and any other computer where the files may have been imported. If the transfer was interrupted or the deletion happened on the computer rather than the phone, recovery software for that computer or USB drive may have a better chance than an app running on the phone.
Unfortunately, recovery from a modern Android phone is usually very unlikely. Phones commonly use full-file encryption, and deleting a file can remove both its filesystem reference and the key needed to decrypt it. Android may also issue TRIM commands, which clear blocks marked as unused. Root access doesn’t necessarily overcome either of those protections. Stop using the phone, don’t install more recovery apps, and avoid unlocking, resetting, or updating it. If the files are truly irreplaceable, a professional data-recovery service is the safest remaining option, though there may be nothing recoverable.
This is a painful lesson, but the best approach afterward is to keep at least two separate backups, with one stored somewhere other than the phone or computer. A cloud backup plus an external drive is much safer than relying on a single transfer. For now, keep the phone and USB drive untouched as much as possible, and don’t save recovered files back onto the same storage.
