I'm putting together my first PC build without relying on someone else to choose every part, and I'd appreciate a sanity check before buying anything. The system is for a friend with a budget of about €3,000, mainly for 1440p gaming at around 144 Hz. I focused on performance rather than appearance, although the case and liquid cooler may be more than necessary.
The current parts are:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- CPU cooler: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 mm
- Motherboard: MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi
- Memory: 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30
- Storage: 512 GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive for the operating system and a 2 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive for games and other files
- GPU: Gigabyte Gaming OC Radeon RX 9070 XT 16 GB
- PSU: MSI MPG A850G PCE5 850 W 80+ Gold
- Case: Fractal Design North XL
Is this a well-balanced build, and are there any parts where I'm spending unnecessarily or should choose a different model?

I’d compare the price of the MAX motherboard with the regular B850 Tomahawk. If the difference is small, keep the MAX, but otherwise the less expensive version should perform the same for this build. The case is also much larger than necessary unless your friend specifically wants a full tower.
For the graphics card, compare reviews and prices from XFX, Sapphire, and PowerColor as well as Gigabyte. The different RX 9070 XT models generally have similar performance, so prioritize cooler noise, warranty, dimensions, and price rather than assuming the most expensive version is faster.
You can probably bring the total down by several hundred euros while keeping essentially the same gaming performance. Look for reasonably priced 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, a single 2 TB NVMe SSD, a less expensive case with good airflow, and a quality 850 W Gold power supply.
The CPU and GPU are the important choices here, and those are already excellent. Just make sure the exact SSD models aren’t low-end drives with poor sustained performance, and verify retailer stock and prices before ordering. There’s no need to increase the PSU to 1,200 W for this system; 850 W is plenty from a reputable model.
Yes, the core combination is very strong for 1440p high-refresh gaming. The 9800X3D, RX 9070 XT, 32 GB of DDR5-6000 CL30, and an 850 W power supply are all appropriate. You don’t need a bottleneck calculator for this pairing; real game performance and the target resolution matter much more.
The main issue is value. A 360 mm liquid cooler is overkill for this processor, and a good dual-tower air cooler would be cheaper, quieter, and easier to maintain. You could also install the operating system on the 2 TB drive instead of buying a separate 512 GB SSD. That saves money without reducing gaming performance.

The separate boot drive isn’t harmful, but it doesn’t provide a meaningful gaming benefit. One good 2 TB SSD is simpler, and you can always add another drive later if storage becomes tight.
