I'm running a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with a ZOTAC RTX 5070 and an Acer Nitro VG252Q 1080p 280Hz IPS monitor. I've heard that using a powerful graphics card at 1080p can leave performance on the table and that 1440p would be a better match. Is the image-quality improvement worth upgrading, or should I keep my current high-refresh-rate 1080p display?

Pay attention to pixel density, not just resolution. For example, 1080p at 21 inches is around 105 pixels per inch, while 1440p at 32 inches is about 101 PPI, so the larger 1440p screen may not look much sharper. A 27-inch 1440p monitor is usually a better sweet spot for clarity. You can also use DLSS or lower the render resolution when a game is too demanding.
A 1440p monitor would make better use of the RTX 5070, and the sharper image is noticeable in games, text, and videos. I upgraded from 1080p and personally wouldn’t want to go back. A 1440p OLED with a high refresh rate would be a particularly impressive upgrade, assuming it fits your budget.
The jump in resolution is subjective, but the combination of 1440p, a high refresh rate, and OLED can feel like a major overall upgrade. On the other hand, some people notice the increase in frame rate more than the extra sharpness. If you’re happy with your current display and mostly play competitive games, there’s no urgent reason to change.
You don’t need to upgrade just because people talk about bottlenecks. Your 7800X3D can easily handle high-refresh-rate 1080p gaming, and staying at 1080p will help the system maintain extremely high frame rates for longer. Move to 1440p if you want a sharper picture and are comfortable with somewhat lower frame rates or using DLSS in demanding games.

That makes sense. I’m mainly trying to decide whether the visual improvement is large enough to justify replacing a monitor that already feels very smooth.
