I built my PC in 2022 with a Ryzen 5 4600G because its integrated graphics let me postpone buying a dedicated GPU. I now have an RTX 5060 8GB, but I'm still using the 4600G and am considering a CPU upgrade. Would a Ryzen 5 5500X3D or Ryzen 7 5800X3D be a worthwhile improvement, especially since DDR5 and SSD prices make a full platform upgrade less appealing? My current system has an ASUS PRIME B450M-GAMING II, 16GB of 2x8GB DDR4 memory, and a 500W power supply. I'm planning to replace the PSU with a quality 650W model. Do I also need to move to a B550M motherboard, or can my current B450 board handle one of these processors?

With an RTX 5060, the GPU will usually be the main limitation at higher resolutions and graphics settings, so the CPU upgrade won’t improve every game equally. It is most worthwhile for CPU-heavy games, competitive titles, or situations where you want very high frame rates. PCIe 3.0 on the B450 board should not meaningfully hurt this setup; the 5060 is unlikely to lose much performance from running at PCIe 3.0. A quality 650W PSU is a reasonable choice, but prioritize build quality over wattage alone.
An AM4 upgrade still makes sense if you want to avoid the cost of a new motherboard, DDR5, and memory. The 5500X3D should be a strong gaming upgrade from the 4600G, while the 5800X3D is faster but often difficult to justify if it costs substantially more. Your B450 board should be usable as long as the BIOS supports the processor. Update the BIOS before changing CPUs, and check ASUS’s CPU support list for the exact required version.
The 5600X3D can also be worth considering if it is available locally at a good price. It offers excellent gaming performance, but availability is limited. Regardless of which X3D chip you choose, upgrading to 32GB of DDR4 would be a sensible improvement alongside the CPU.
The 5600X3D probably isn’t available near me, so I’ll compare the prices of the 5500X3D and 5800X3D instead.
That makes sense. I was mainly worried that PCIe 3.0 would limit the new CPU or graphics card, but it sounds like keeping the current motherboard is reasonable.
