I'm considering upgrading my AM4 system from a Ryzen 5 5600X to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. The processor is paired with a Radeon RX 9070 XT, 32GB of RAM, and a Linux-based setup. I mainly play CPU-heavy games such as World of Warcraft and Deadlock, along with some older single-player titles. I'm particularly interested in whether the 5800X3D would improve frame-time consistency and 1% lows, since the 5600X may be limiting the graphics card in these games. The upgrade would cost nearly €400, while moving to a newer platform would also require a motherboard and DDR5 memory upgrade. Since I only play a handful of CPU-intensive games regularly, would the 5800X3D be a sensible upgrade, or should I keep the 5600X and wait for a full platform change?

I’d seriously compare the total cost of AM5 before deciding. A Ryzen 9700X or one of the newer X3D chips on a budget board could offer similar or better gaming performance and leave you with a longer-lived platform. However, DDR5 memory prices have risen sharply, so the total upgrade can easily be far more than the CPU alone. If replacing the motherboard and RAM would push the build over €1,000, the 5800X3D is a reasonable way to extend the current system.
Before spending anything, try undervolting or tuning the 5600X and check actual GPU usage, frame times, and per-core CPU load in your regular games. Linux graphics drivers and game-specific optimization can also affect performance, so a CPU upgrade may not completely solve every dip. If testing shows the 5600X is consistently limiting the GPU and you plan to keep the AM4 system for several more years, the 5800X3D can be worthwhile—but €400 is still a premium price.
At nearly €400, the 5800X3D is difficult to justify. It can deliver a meaningful improvement in CPU-limited games, especially in minimum FPS and frame-time consistency, but it’s still an older AM4 chip. If you can find one used around €200–€250, the upgrade makes much more sense, particularly if you sell the 5600X. Otherwise, you may be better off keeping the 5600X and saving for a complete platform upgrade later.
With a GPU as powerful as the 9070 XT, upgrading the CPU can definitely help in games like WoW and Deadlock, even at 1440p. The extra cache on the 5800X3D is especially useful for reducing dips and improving 1% lows. Just make sure the performance increase matters at your resolution and refresh rate; demanding 4K single-player games will usually remain GPU-limited.

That’s my concern with AM5 as well. Once the CPU, motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5 are included, the platform upgrade costs much more than I’m comfortable spending right now.
