Is Upgrading from a Ryzen 5 7600X to an X3D CPU Worth It at 1440p?

I currently have a Ryzen 5 7600X paired with an RX 9070, and I play at 1440p. Most of my games are single-player titles such as Cyberpunk, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and Resident Evil rather than competitive games. My budget is flexible, but I still want the best value. Would upgrading to a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or Ryzen 7 9800X3D provide a noticeable improvement, or would I be better off keeping the 7600X and waiting for a newer generation?

My recommendation would be to wait. A future AM5 generation may offer a much larger performance jump, or current X3D chips may become cheaper. Upgrade now only if you are experiencing stutters, poor 1% lows, or cannot reach the refresh rate you want after confirming that the CPU—not the GPU—is responsible.

If you decide to upgrade anyway, the 7800X3D is the better value choice if you can find it at a good price. The 9800X3D is faster, but the extra cost may only produce a small gain with an RX 9070 at 1440p. I would compare benchmarks for the specific games you play rather than relying only on overall averages.

For your current setup, I would probably keep the 7600X. At 1440p with visually demanding single-player games, the RX 9070 will usually be the limiting component before the CPU. Check GPU usage and frame-time graphs while playing: if the GPU is consistently near 100% and you are happy with the performance, an X3D upgrade is unlikely to make a meaningful difference.

X3D processors are especially useful for simulation-heavy games, large open worlds, very high refresh rates, and situations where you are CPU-limited. They can also improve 1% lows and reduce stutter, but that does not automatically make them worthwhile for every game. If your current games already run smoothly, there is no urgent reason to upgrade.

That is generally true, although some open-world games can still benefit from the extra cache even at 1440p. The improvement is more likely to show up in frame-time consistency than in average FPS.

Your monitor's refresh rate matters too. A 7600X is likely plenty for a 120 Hz display in this kind of gaming, while a high-refresh monitor and lowered graphics settings could expose a CPU limitation. Before buying anything, see whether the CPU is actually reaching high usage or whether one or more cores are limiting frame rates.
