I finished my current PC about five months ago with a Ryzen 7 5700X, 32GB of DDR4 memory, and an RTX 5070. I chose the AM4 platform because DDR5 and newer-platform components were too expensive at the time—my memory alone cost around €120. Since prices still haven't improved much, I'm wondering whether upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D would be a worthwhile way to get the most gaming performance out of my current system, or whether I should save my money and eventually move to AM5 instead. I mainly play at 1440p and want to know whether the upgrade would make a noticeable difference.

The 5800X3D can still be a strong gaming chip, especially when paired with a high-end GPU, but it only makes sense if the games you play are CPU-limited. Check your GPU usage while gaming: if the GPU is consistently near full utilization, a CPU upgrade probably won’t change much. If the CPU is holding things back, saving for a complete AM5 upgrade may offer better long-term value.
I’d probably keep the 5700X for now. It’s still a capable gaming CPU, and at 1440p you’ll often be limited by the RTX 5070 rather than the processor. Unless you’re seeing obvious CPU bottlenecks, poor 1% lows, or stuttering, the 5800X3D may not provide enough improvement to justify its current price.
I’d avoid moving to AM5 just because prices might rise later. Your current system is already well balanced, and buying a motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 memory together would cost far more than simply keeping the 5700X. Save the money and upgrade the whole platform when you actually need more performance or find a good DDR5 deal. You can also sell the old CPU, motherboard, and RAM to reduce the cost.
If you’re already experiencing CPU bottlenecks in the games you play, the 5800X3D is a reasonable drop-in upgrade and could noticeably improve 1% lows. Otherwise, there’s no urgency. A future AM5 build will give you a newer platform and an upgrade path, while the 5700X should remain perfectly usable for quite a while.
At 1440p, the upgrade is more likely to help with minimum frame rates and stutters than with average FPS. I’d only buy it if you find a genuinely good deal.
