Is upgrading from an RTX 3080 to an RTX 5080 worthwhile for 480Hz CS2?

I've been using a Core i9-12900K with an RTX 3080 for several years. At 1080p on low settings, I get around 340 FPS consistently in Counter-Strike 2 with an uncapped frame rate. I'm considering upgrading to an RTX 5080 and possibly moving from my 1080p 240Hz monitor to a 1080p 480Hz-or-faster display. I previously tried 27-inch 1440p but couldn't get comfortable with the larger screen. Would a GPU upgrade meaningfully improve my CS2 performance, or would I be better off upgrading the CPU first?

For reference, a system with a 7800X3D and RTX 3080 can reach roughly 450–500 FPS in lighter parts of the game, with drops into the high 300s during fights. That suggests your 340 FPS may be more related to the 12900K and game workload than the GPU. Check GPU usage and frame-time behavior before buying a graphics card.

If you do replace the GPU, the RTX 5080 isn’t automatically the best value for 1080p CS2. A Radeon 9070 XT may offer comparable performance for substantially less money, depending on local pricing and drivers. Still, for this specific use case, I’d prioritize the CPU upgrade and keep the 3080 unless you also plan to play more demanding games or use a higher resolution.

At 1080p on competitive settings, CS2 is usually limited more by the CPU than the graphics card. Your RTX 3080 is already capable, so moving to a 5080 may not add much unless your GPU is consistently at full utilization. A newer gaming-focused CPU, such as a Ryzen X3D chip, would likely make a bigger difference to average and 1% low FPS.

Before spending on hardware, update the motherboard BIOS and check your CPU settings, temperatures, memory profile, and background processes. A 480Hz monitor can be useful for competitive play, but the difference above 240Hz is relatively subtle. Make sure you can actually sustain very high FPS and consider adaptive sync and motion clarity as well as the refresh-rate number.
