Laptop games suddenly look blurry and run much slower after an NVIDIA driver update

I have an RTX 3050 laptop with 4GB of VRAM. Before updating my drivers, Overwatch ran at around 75 FPS and War Thunder usually exceeded 100 FPS. Two days ago, I switched from GeForce Experience to the NVIDIA app and accidentally performed a clean driver install. After that, my games either failed to display properly or became extremely blurry and slow.

I tried driver 610.88 and many older versions, ranging from 551.31 through the newest release. I also used DDU and installed the driver offline from Safe Mode, but the performance still has not returned. Both games now struggle to maintain 60 FPS, and at one point they were barely reaching 20 FPS. The image quality is also much worse than before: character details and clothing look hazy and poorly rendered, even though my in-game settings appear unchanged.

I checked DLSS, render scaling, power management, texture filtering, VSync, PhysX, and other NVIDIA settings. I also confirmed that the dedicated RTX 3050 is being used rather than the integrated GPU, installed the laptop manufacturer's drivers, and checked the Windows and NVIDIA graphics settings. The GPU reaches high usage and the VRAM is nearly full, but the games still perform and look worse than they did before the driver change. What else could cause this, and is there a safe way to restore the previous performance without risking the laptop or my files?

First verify which GPU is actually rendering the games. On hybrid-graphics laptops, a clean driver install can make Windows choose the integrated GPU, which would explain both the low frame rate and the blurry image. Check Task Manager’s GPU graphs while a game is running, then assign each game’s executable to the high-performance NVIDIA GPU under Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics. You can also set the preferred GPU to the RTX 3050 in NVIDIA Control Panel.

I checked this and the RTX 3050 is definitely the GPU being used. It is reaching nearly full load, so the problem does not seem to be the game switching to integrated graphics.

A clean install may have reset more than just the driver version. Check the in-game render scale or resolution scale first—Overwatch and War Thunder can look extremely blurry if those are set below 100% or if DLSS is using an overly aggressive mode. Also confirm the laptop is plugged in, Battery Boost and Whisper Mode are disabled, the display is set to its maximum refresh rate, and there is no frame limiter enabled.

The NVIDIA and in-game settings were checked repeatedly, including render scaling, DLSS, power settings, and frame limits. Changing them did not restore the previous image quality or performance.

Since the dedicated GPU is active and the usual settings have been checked, the next useful comparison is whether the problem affects every game or only these two. Check the actual render resolution, GPU clock speed, temperatures, and CPU usage while playing. A GPU can show high utilization while being power- or temperature-limited. If clocks are unusually low, inspect the laptop’s performance mode and charger detection. If clocks and temperatures are normal, restoring Windows to a point before the driver change or performing a repair installation may be more effective than trying another driver version.

On laptops, installing only the generic NVIDIA package is not always enough. The integrated graphics driver, chipset driver, and the manufacturer’s graphics-switching software all need to be present. Reinstall those from the laptop manufacturer’s support page, then reinstall the NVIDIA driver. If the laptop has a MUX switch, testing dGPU-only mode can also help identify a hybrid-graphics problem.

I installed the OEM drivers and confirmed the dedicated GPU is active. I have not tried a system restore or changed the MUX mode yet because I am worried about affecting the system and my files.
