My Lenovo IdeaPad C340's display suddenly became so dark that I need to shine my phone's flashlight on it to read anything. I can still make out the image, but changing the brightness setting—even all the way to maximum—doesn't make any difference. How can I tell whether this is a software problem, a loose connection, or a failed backlight, and what are my practical repair options?

Check whether the screen is equally dim in the BIOS or startup menu. If it’s already dark there, the problem is almost certainly hardware—usually a failed LED backlight, display cable, or screen panel. If the BIOS looks normal, try Safe Mode or reinstalling the graphics and display drivers to rule out an operating-system issue.
If you can borrow or buy an external monitor or portable HDMI display, connect it to the laptop. That should let you use the computer normally and also help confirm that the laptop itself is working while the built-in screen is being repaired.
I don’t currently have another monitor, but a portable HDMI display might be useful if it can mirror the laptop automatically.
The backlight or its power circuit has probably failed. A loose display cable is also possible, but the faint image strongly points to the backlight. Replacing the entire display panel is often more practical than repairing the lighting components, though laptop screen repairs can be tricky. I’d watch a teardown guide and get a repair-shop estimate before attempting it yourself.
I’m watching repair videos now, but they involve specialized tools and testing power levels. I probably wouldn’t be comfortable doing the replacement myself.

Is replacing the backlight or panel usually expensive? I’m having trouble getting into the BIOS because I can barely see the screen.
