MacBook rejects the correct password when adding a Touch ID fingerprint

I recently bought a MacBook Pro with an M4 chip, but the initial Touch ID setup didn't work properly. When I try to add a fingerprint in System Settings, macOS asks for my password and then says it's incorrect, even though the same password successfully unlocks the Mac from the lock screen. Has anyone found a reliable fix for this issue?

Which macOS version are you running? The issue may be related to the newer Golden Gate release rather than the MacBook hardware itself.

It’s running Golden Gate.

I ran into the same problem. A technician changed my password and got Touch ID working temporarily, but the password rejection returned a few days later. Changing the password may not be a lasting fix, so this could be an operating-system bug.
