My phone showed an incoming call from my girlfriend, but she never called—what happened?

Around 2 a.m., I woke up to what appeared to be an incoming call from my girlfriend. I answered, but the call immediately went to voicemail. The call screen then seemed stuck, so I waited for it to end before calling her back. She didn't answer my calls or texts because she was asleep. The next morning, she said she had never called me, and her phone showed no outgoing call to me. The incoming call also disappeared from my phone's call history. My provider said they can't view incoming calls, so I'm trying to understand whether this could have been caller-ID spoofing, a phone glitch, or something related to being half asleep.

It’s also possible you were in a false awakening or partly dreaming. Those can feel extremely realistic, including hearing a ringtone, seeing the phone screen, and trying to use apps that behave slightly wrong. Sleep deprivation and being woken suddenly can make this more likely.

I remember seeing the call and keeping the phone in sight the entire time, but a sleep-related explanation still seems more likely than anything supernatural. I’ll document it if it happens again.

Caller ID can be spoofed, so a scammer or automated system could potentially make the call appear to come from her number. That said, there’s no way to confirm that from the details here, especially since the call didn’t remain in your history. If it happens again, take a screenshot or record the screen before the call disappears.

Phones and VoIP services can occasionally produce phantom rings or calls that don’t appear in the normal call log. A temporary network or handset glitch could explain why the call seemed real but left no record. Restarting the phone and checking for system updates would be a reasonable first step.

For peace of mind, check that your phone is updated, review unknown-call and call-forwarding settings, and run a security scan. A factory reset is probably unnecessary unless you notice other strange behavior, such as unexplained apps, login alerts, or messages being sent without you.

I may reset it if anything else odd happens, but for now I’ll update it and keep an eye on things.
