I bought a new Acer laptop a few hours ago. It was showing roughly 50–60% battery, and I left it unattended for a few minutes. When I came back, it had shut down completely. After connecting the charger and turning it on, the battery indicator showed 0%. Is this possibly a one-time battery calibration issue, or does it indicate a faulty battery that should be checked or replaced?

The battery gauge may need to calibrate. Charge it uninterrupted until it reaches 100%, then use it normally and see whether the percentage remains accurate. You can also check the battery’s design capacity, current full-charge capacity, and cycle count through Acer’s diagnostics or the BIOS. A brand-new machine should have very little wear.
You can perform one calibration cycle by charging to full, using the laptop until it shuts down, and then charging it completely again. Don’t do this regularly, since deep discharges put extra wear on lithium batteries. For everyday use, keeping it roughly between 20% and 85% is healthier.
Give it one more charge and test, but don’t let the store dismiss repeated failures as normal. If the battery goes from around half full to empty again, return it promptly while it’s still covered by the store’s return policy or warranty.
That isn’t normal behavior for a new laptop. Charge it fully and monitor it through another battery cycle. If it suddenly drops again or shuts off while showing plenty of charge, take it back to the store and request a warranty replacement or inspection.

Thanks, I’ll charge it fully and watch it closely. If it happens again, I’ll take it back instead of continuing to use it.
